Aaron’s WRX is a daily driver, and that is the important part of this story.
This was not a car that lived under a cover and only came out on perfect days.
It had been used, washed, parked, driven and exposed to normal life over a long period of time.
The car had also been coated before, more than once, over the years.
But by the time it came back to AutoFX WA, the paint was in poor condition, there was no real water behaviour left, and the whole vehicle had severe overspray across it.
This is exactly why I do not like talking about ceramic coatings like they are magic.
They help, but they still need care.
Subaru WRX Overspray Removal And Ceramic Coating Perth
Aaron’s WRX needed a lot more than a quick wash and polish.
The paint had heavy contamination, overspray across the vehicle, and the finish needed proper correction before any new protection made sense.
The job included clay decontamination, multi-day paint correction, headlight PPF, wheels removed for coating, interior cleaning, engine bay tidy-up and ceramic coating.
It was a big job because the car had reached the point where normal cleaning was not going to bring it back.
That is the difference between maintaining a car and having to recover one.
A Daily Driver Has A Harder Life
A daily WRX gets used.
It sees sun, rain, dust, road grime, car parks, washing, bugs, brake dust, overspray risk, tree sap and everything else that comes with normal driving.
That is why daily drivers need realistic expectations.
A coating can make the car easier to clean and maintain, but it does not stop life from happening to the paint.
If the car is not washed safely, if contamination is left too long, or if something like overspray lands across the whole vehicle, the coating is not going to magically save the finish forever.
At some point, the paint needs proper work again.
Previous Coatings And Real-World Use
This WRX had been coated a couple of times over about seven years.
From memory, the coatings had done roughly three years each, which is realistic when you are talking about a car that is actually used.
That is a point I think customers need to understand.
Even if a coating can last a long time, the paint underneath is still living in the real world.
Wash marks, contamination, scratches, overspray, sun exposure and general use can all build up over time.
That does not mean coatings are useless.
It means coatings still need safe washing, maintenance and realistic care.
No Real Water Behaviour Left
By the time the WRX came back, there was no real water behaviour left on the paint.
That told us the protection was no longer doing what it should.
Water behaviour is not the only way to judge a coating, but when the surface has gone flat, contaminated and dirty, it is a strong sign that the car needs attention.
In this case, the overspray and contamination were the bigger problems.
The paint needed to be cleaned back properly before anything else could be done.
Severe Overspray Across The Vehicle
The WRX had severe paint overspray across the whole vehicle.
Overspray is one of those things that can make a car feel terrible to touch.
The paint can feel rough, gritty and dirty even after washing.
It can sit on paint, glass, trim, lights and other surfaces.
Once overspray has bonded to the surface, normal washing will not remove it properly.
That is why this job needed proper decontamination before correction could even start.
Two Clay Bars Thrown Away
Two clay bars were used just to remove as much overspray as possible from this WRX.
Both clay bars had to be thrown away afterwards.
That gives you an idea of how much contamination was sitting on the car.
Clay is useful, but it is not a magic fix.
When a car is heavily contaminated, clay becomes loaded with the overspray and debris it is pulling from the surface.
At that point, you do not keep using it and drag that contamination around the paint.
You throw it away and keep working safely.
Why Decontamination Is Important Before Polishing
Paint correction should not be started over heavy contamination.
If the surface is covered in overspray, grit or bonded contamination, machine polishing can become harder and riskier.
The pad can pick up contamination and drag it across the paint.
The finish can become harder to refine.
The correction process can take longer because the surface is not clean enough to polish properly.
That is why decontamination is important before paint correction.
The cleaner the surface is before polishing, the better chance the correction has of producing a clean result.
Multi-Day Paint Correction
After the overspray removal and decontamination, the WRX needed multi-day paint correction.
This was not a one-hour polish.
The paint had to be worked properly to improve gloss, clarity and reflection after years of use and contamination.
Daily-driven cars often have wash marks, scratches, haze and other defects that build up slowly over time.
Once the paint reaches that point, the only real way to improve it properly is with machine polishing and correction.
That takes time.
For current correction services, see Paint Correction Perth.
Paint Correction Before Ceramic Coating
Paint correction had to come before the new coating.
There is no point putting ceramic coating over rough, contaminated or tired paint and pretending that is a good result.
The coating will add protection, gloss and slickness, but it will not magically remove the defects underneath.
That is why the paint needs to be prepared first.
On Aaron’s WRX, the correction work was an important part of bringing the car back before the coating was applied.
Coatings Are Not A Reset Button
A ceramic coating is not a reset button.
It does not fix poor paint.
It does not remove overspray.
It does not stop bad washing from marking the finish.
It does not mean the car can be ignored for years and still come back looking perfect.
What a coating can do is help with gloss, slickness, water behaviour and easier washing when the paint has been prepared properly.
That is the realistic value.
Headlight PPF
Headlight PPF was also installed as part of the job.
Headlights sit right at the front of the vehicle and take a lot of abuse from road grime, bugs, washing, light abrasion and UV exposure.
Film gives the headlight lens a sacrificial layer.
It does not make the headlights impossible to damage, but it gives the lens a better chance than leaving it completely exposed.
On a daily driver, that can be a very practical addition.
For more information, see Headlight PPF Perth.
Wheels Removed And Coated
The wheels were removed for coating.
That allows better access to the wheel faces, barrels and areas that are usually harder to clean properly when the wheels are still on the car.
WRX wheels can collect brake dust, road grime and contamination quickly.
Wheel coating can help make cleaning easier, but it does not stop the wheels from getting dirty.
The value is in making the grime easier to manage during maintenance.
Removing the wheels gives the job a better starting point because more of the wheel can be cleaned and protected properly.
Interior Cleaning
The interior was also cleaned as part of the job.
On a daily driver, the interior takes just as much use as the exterior.
Seats, mats, door trims, console areas, steering wheel and touch points all collect dirt, oils, dust and normal wear from everyday use.
Interior cleaning helps bring the cabin back to a cleaner and more comfortable condition.
It is not always about making the car look brand new.
Sometimes it is simply about making a well-used car feel cared for again.
Engine Bay Tidy-Up
The engine bay was also tidied up.
On a WRX, the engine bay is part of the character of the car.
It does not always need to be dressed heavily or made shiny everywhere.
The aim is usually to clean away dust, grime and build-up so the area looks neater and better maintained.
As with everything else, the process needs to suit the car.
Not every area should be soaked or attacked with strong cleaner.
Previous Paintwork And Respray Notes
This WRX also had signs of previous paintwork and respray work on several areas.
That is important to note because not every panel behaves the same during correction.
Factory paint, repainted panels and repaired areas can all polish differently.
Paint thickness, hardness and previous repair quality can change what is safe and what result is realistic.
That is why I like noting these things during the job.
It gives the owner a better understanding of the car, not just the final shine.
Why A Paint Report Is Useful
A realistic paint report is useful on a car like this.
It helps explain what was found, what was corrected, what limits were present and what the owner should know going forward.
Not every mark can or should be chased.
Not every panel has the same history.
Not every result is about perfection.
The important part is giving the owner a clear understanding of the car’s condition and the work that has been done.
The Job Value And Budget
The job value on Aaron’s WRX ended up around $5,200, with the original quoted budget around $4,300.
That gives some context to the amount of work involved.
When a car has heavy overspray, multiple days of correction, headlight PPF, wheel coating, interior cleaning and engine bay work, the job can grow quickly.
That does not mean every WRX needs that level of work.
It means this WRX needed that level of work because of the condition it was in.
Why This WRX Page Is Worth Keeping
This page is worth keeping because it shows a real-world coating story.
It is easy to talk about ceramic coatings when a car is brand new and already clean.
Aaron’s WRX is different.
It shows what happens when a daily-driven car has years of use, old coatings, poor maintenance and severe contamination.
It also shows the importance of proper decontamination and correction before applying new protection.
That is useful for customers because it is honest.
Daily Cars Still Need Care
This is the main lesson from this job.
Daily cars still need care.
Even coated daily cars need safe washing.
They need maintenance.
They need contamination removed before it becomes a bigger problem.
They need proper correction when the paint has become too far gone for basic cleaning.
A coating helps, but the owner still has a role in keeping the car in good condition.
AutoFX WA Ceramic Coating Perth
AutoFX WA offers ceramic coating for new, used, daily-driven, performance and enthusiast vehicles.
The right coating process depends on the vehicle, the paint condition and how the car will be used.
Some cars need light preparation.
Some need heavy correction before coating makes sense.
Some cars, like Aaron’s WRX, need a much bigger reset because contamination and poor care have caught up with the paint.
For current coating services, see Ceramic Coating Perth.

Final Thoughts
Aaron’s WRX is a good example of why ceramic coating still needs proper care.
The car had been coated before, but years of daily use, poor maintenance and severe overspray had caught up with the paint.
Two clay bars were used just to remove as much overspray as possible before correction.
From there, the car needed multi-day paint correction, headlight PPF, wheel coating, interior cleaning, engine bay tidy-up and ceramic coating.
The important part is not pretending coatings failed or that coatings are magic.
The important part is understanding that a daily car still needs safe washing, maintenance and proper correction when contamination or poor care catches up with it.
