New Car Protection with FMJ Coating and OPTiX 10 mil PPF

This new vehicle was prepared for protection with FMJ coating and OPTiX 10 mil paint protection film (PPF).

The combination was chosen to address two different priorities: a coated exterior surface and a very thick physical barrier in the areas selected for film.

There is no single protection package that suits every new vehicle. The right approach depends on how the vehicle will be used, which painted surfaces matter most to the owner, and the condition of the paint before work begins. New does not always mean perfect, so the preparation and inspection stage remains important.

Why choose a 10 mil paint protection film?

OPTiX 10 mil PPF is a very thick paint protection film selected where maximum physical defence is the priority. Film can help reduce the impact of everyday road debris on protected panels, but it is not invincible and should not be treated as a guarantee against every stone strike, scrape or impact.

The extra thickness also changes the installation process. Compared with thinner films, 10 mil material takes longer to position accurately, finish cleanly around edges and allow to settle. The result depends on controlled application, careful handling of the material and the judgement to work with the panel rather than rush it.

For owners considering the broader protection plan for a new vehicle, our new-car coating service explains how we assess coating work around the vehicleโ€™s condition and intended use.

Paint condition still matters on a new vehicle

Before PPF is installed, the paint needs to be washed, dried and inspected. The vehicle is checked for contamination, transport marks, factory finish variation and other imperfections that may affect the final appearance. Any decisions about preparation should be made before the film is applied, not after.

One limitation is particularly relevant with thick PPF: it can make existing paint imperfections more noticeable. Paint nibs are small raised imperfections in a factory paint finish. A customer may not notice a nib before installation, but the added optical layer of film can make it easier to see afterwards.

A visible nib beneath PPF does not automatically indicate an issue with the film or the installerโ€™s workmanship. It may originate in the factory paint itself. AutoFX WA has observed paint nibs on some Kia and Hyundai vehicles we have worked on, although this is a workshop observation rather than a blanket criticism of either brand. Kia and Hyundai make good vehicles, and not every vehicle will present the same paint characteristics.

Clear inspection and discussion before installation are especially important when choosing a thick film. PPF can protect what is underneath it, but it does not remove missing paint, erase every factory imperfection or make the surface visually identical under every lighting condition.

How the coating and film work together

FMJ coating and PPF are different parts of the protection plan. Film provides a physical layer over the selected painted surfaces, while coating work requires its own controlled preparation and application process. Neither product replaces proper washing, drying, inspection or ongoing maintenance.

Coatings are not a substitute for paint protection film where physical impact defence is the main concern. Likewise, film does not make routine cleaning unnecessary. The vehicle still benefits from sensible wash methods and suitable maintenance products after collection.

Our article on preparing and applying OPTiX OP888 ceramic coating provides an example of the preparation discipline involved in coating work. OP888 is a separate coating product from FMJ, but the principle remains the same: surface condition and controlled application matter more than relying on a product name alone.

Aftercare for a protected new vehicle

Aftercare should be straightforward and appropriate for the surfaces fitted to the vehicle. Avoid aggressive washing practices, dirty wash media and unnecessary abrasion. Regular cleaning helps remove road film and contaminants before they build up, while gentle drying reduces the chance of adding avoidable wash marks.

AutoFX WA can advise on suitable maintenance options through our car-care products and aftercare range. The best routine depends on the vehicleโ€™s coating, film coverage, storage conditions and how often it is driven.

For this job, the key decision was not simply choosing the thickest film available. It was matching FMJ coating and OPTiX 10 mil PPF to the ownerโ€™s protection priorities, while being open about paint condition, installation limitations and the time required to fit thick film properly.
