Why Do Ceramic Coating Prices Vary So Much In Perth?

One of the questions I get asked most often is why ceramic coating prices can vary so much from one business to another. It is not unusual for someone to receive one quote for under $1,000 and another for more than $2,500, which naturally leads to the question of whether one business is simply charging too much or another is charging too little.

The reality is that ceramic coating prices are often difficult to compare because every business includes different levels of preparation, different products and different amounts of labour. Looking only at the final price rarely tells the full story.

Rather than asking which coating is the best, I think the better question is what is actually included before the coating is applied.

The Coating Is Only One Part Of The Job

Many people assume they are paying primarily for the ceramic coating itself. In reality, the bottle of coating is often only a small part of the total cost.

The preparation before the coating is applied usually determines how much time is involved and, ultimately, how much the job will cost. Washing, decontamination, paint inspection, machine polishing, correcting gloss-black trims, panel preparation and careful application all require time and experience.

A ceramic coating protects the finish underneath it. If the paint has not been prepared properly, the coating simply protects the defects that are already there.

Not Every Vehicle Needs The Same Amount Of Preparation

This is one of the biggest reasons prices vary.

Some vehicles arrive with paint that only needs a careful wash, decontamination and a light refinement before coating. Others require many hours of paint correction because they have swirl marks, scratches, sanding marks, holograms or heavily marked gloss-black trims.

The age of the vehicle is not always a good indication of how much preparation it needs. A brand-new vehicle can sometimes require considerably more correction than a well-maintained car that is several years old.

That is why I prefer to inspect every vehicle before recommending a coating package rather than assuming every customer needs the same service.

Paint Correction Can Be The Largest Part Of The Quote

Customers are often surprised to learn that paint correction can represent the largest component of the total price.

Machine polishing permanently refines the clear coat by removing or reducing defects and improving the way light reflects from the paint. This is what creates the clarity, gloss and depth that people often associate with ceramic coating.

The coating then protects that corrected finish.

If very little correction is included, the overall quote may be considerably lower, but the appearance of the finished vehicle may also be very different.

A Real Example

A recent vehicle that came through our workshop was a brand-new BMW X3 M50. The owner had already paid for ceramic coating elsewhere, but the paint still contained scratches, machine-polishing holograms and heavily swirled gloss-black trims.

Brandon spent well over 20 hours correcting the paint and trims before the vehicle received its new ceramic coating. The paint correction component alone exceeded $1,500 before the coating itself was even applied.

What Else Can Affect The Price?

There are many other factors that influence the final cost of a ceramic coating package.

The amount of paint correction required.
The condition of gloss-black trims.
Whether wheels are removed for coating.
The number of coating layers being applied.
The coating product selected.
The amount of time allocated to curing.
The workshop environment.
The level of inspection before and after application.
The experience of the installer.
Warranty and aftercare support.

Not every customer requires every one of these services, but they all influence the amount of labour involved.

Should You Always Buy The Most Expensive Package?

Not necessarily.

I have never believed that every customer should automatically buy the biggest or most expensive package.

Some daily-driven vehicles only require a light refinement before coating. Some older vehicles are better suited to a practical enhancement rather than chasing every small defect. Other owners are looking for the highest possible finish before the coating is applied and are happy to invest more time into the preparation.

The right package depends on the condition of the vehicle and what the owner is hoping to achieve.

Questions Worth Asking Before Comparing Quotes

If you are comparing ceramic coating quotes, I think these questions are more useful than simply asking what brand of coating is being used.

How much paint correction is included?
Will scratches and holograms be corrected where possible?
Are gloss-black trims included?
How long will the vehicle be in the workshop?
Is decontamination included?
Is the vehicle inspected before recommending the package?
What aftercare advice is provided?

Those answers usually tell you much more about the value of the job than the coating name alone.

Preparation Creates The Finish

This is something I explain to customers almost every day because it is one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding ceramic coatings.

Paint correction creates the clarity, gloss and reflections by permanently refining the clear coat. Ceramic coating then adds a tough bonded protective layer while increasing gloss, slickness, reflections and making future maintenance easier.

Without proper preparation, the coating simply protects whatever finish already exists underneath.

Choosing The Right Ceramic Coating Package

Every owner has different expectations, budgets and priorities.

Some people simply want their vehicle easier to wash.

Others are looking for the highest possible finish before the coating is applied.

Neither approach is wrong, but the amount of preparation required can be very different.

That is why I believe inspecting the vehicle first and discussing the owner’s expectations will always produce a better recommendation than simply selecting the cheapest or most expensive package.
