VF SS Sedan Rear Guard Rolling for More Tyre Clearance

This Holden VF SS sedan came into AutoFX WA to have its rear guards rolled for additional wheel and tyre clearance.

The objective was to reduce the inner guard lip as a potential rubbing point while retaining the visible exterior shape of the rear quarter panels. This was a standard rear guard roll rather than a major guard pump.

Guard rolling is not simply a matter of applying as much force as possible. The lip needs to be reshaped progressively while the panel, paint condition, wheel position and surrounding obstructions are monitored throughout the job.

Why the VF SS needed its rear guards rolled

Changes to wheel width, tyre size, wheel offset or suspension height can reduce the clearance available inside the rear wheel arches of a VF Commodore.

A wheel and tyre combination may appear to clear while the vehicle is stationary but contact the inner guard lip when the suspension compresses, passengers are added or the vehicle travels through a corner or over an uneven surface.

Rolling the inner lip creates more usable space around the tyre without automatically changing the visible shape of the rear quarter panel.

Rolling the rear guard lips progressively

The rear guards were inspected before work began. Paint condition, previous repairs and the shape of the inner lip all influence how safely a guard can be rolled.

The inner lips were then worked gradually rather than being forced into position in one movement. Repeated controlled passes allow the lip angle to change progressively and reduce unnecessary stress on the panel and paint.

Appropriate heat helps the paint remain more flexible during the process, but it cannot guarantee that paint will not crack. Older paint, previous refinishing, body filler and existing damage can substantially increase the risk.

Guard rolling versus guard pumping

Guard rolling and guard pumping are related services, but they are not the same.

A standard guard roll concentrates on reshaping the inner metal lip that faces the tyre. When completed carefully, there may be little or no noticeable change to the exterior profile.

Guard pumping involves moving the visible outer section of the guard further away from the wheel. It may create more clearance, but it also changes the panel shape and normally requires considerably more time, force and judgement.

This VF SS required its rear lips rolled rather than a major outward pump.

Frequently asked questions about VF SS guard rolling

Why do VF Commodore rear tyres rub?

Common causes include wider wheels, lower wheel offsets, wider tyres, lowered suspension and reduced clearance when the rear suspension compresses. The tyre may also contact a bumper mounting point, liner or another local obstruction rather than the main guard lip.

Will guard rolling stop every type of tyre rubbing?

No. Guard rolling only creates clearance where the inner lip is the obstruction. It cannot correct an unsuitable wheel offset, an excessively wide tyre, incorrect suspension geometry or contact deeper inside the wheel arch.

The actual rubbing point should be identified before deciding whether guard rolling is the correct solution.

How much clearance does guard rolling create?

The amount varies between vehicles. It depends on the width and angle of the original lip, the panel construction and how much safe movement is available.

A standard roll generally provides a useful but limited increase. If substantially more space is required, guard pumping or changes to the wheel and tyre combination may need to be considered.

Does rolling the guards change their exterior appearance?

A normal guard roll is intended to reshape the inner lip while keeping the visible exterior profile as close to factory as reasonably possible.

A guard pump is different because it deliberately moves the outer profile. Customers should be clear about which service is required before work begins.

Can guard rolling crack the paint?

Yes. There is always a paint-cracking risk when a painted metal edge is reshaped.

Controlled pressure and appropriate heat can reduce the risk, but cannot remove it. Paint age, previous repairs, excessive paint thickness, body filler, corrosion and existing chips can all affect the outcome.

Can a previously repaired or repainted guard be rolled?

Sometimes, but the risk is generally higher. Refinished panels may contain thicker paint, primer or body filler that does not flex in the same way as the original factory finish.

Paint-thickness readings and a visual inspection can provide useful information, but they cannot reveal every previous repair or guarantee that filler will not crack.

Do the wheel-arch liners need to be removed?

That depends on the model, the required clearance and the location of the rubbing. Some liners can remain in place, while others may need to be moved, trimmed or temporarily removed to access an obstruction properly.

Rolling over a liner mounting point without addressing it can leave a noticeable lump underneath and produce a poor clearance result.

Will guard rolling fix wheels with the wrong offset?

Guard rolling may provide additional clearance for a sensible wheel and tyre combination, but it should not be treated as a way to make any wheel fit.

If the wheel sits too far outward or the tyre is excessively wide, rolling the lip may not create enough space. Different wheels, tyres, alignment settings or suspension changes may be required.

Is a wheel alignment required after guard rolling?

Rolling the guards does not normally alter the vehicleโ€™s alignment because the suspension settings are not being adjusted. However, an alignment may still be useful when rubbing is related to suspension height, excessive toe or unsuitable camber.

Should the guards be rolled before or after fitting new wheels?

Ideally, the actual wheel and tyre combination should be available so its clearance can be assessed properly. Wheel width, offset and tyre shape all affect where contact may occur.

If the new wheels have not yet been fitted, accurate specifications are important when discussing the required work.

How much does VF SS guard rolling cost?

The cost depends on whether one or both sides require work, the condition of the guards, previous repairs and whether liners, brackets or bumper mounting areas also need attention.

Photographs and wheel specifications can help with an initial assessment, but an inspection may be required before confirming the complete job.
