VF Commodore Rear Guard Rolling With A Previous Bog Repair
Janelle brought her VF Commodore to AutoFX WA all the way from Avely because the rear tyres needed more clearance, but once I inspected the inner guard lips it became clear that this was not going to be a normal full guard-rolling job.
A previous backyard or DIY-style repair had left a large amount of body filler, commonly called bog, through parts of the rear guard area. The filler extended into sections that would normally need to move during the rolling process, which created a very real risk of cracking the repair and opening the outside paint if I tried to force the lip over completely.
Janelle was preparing to sell the car, so the aim was not to turn a tyre-clearance problem into another bodywork bill. We needed to improve the clearance while preserving the outside appearance of the vehicle as much as possible.
The Guard Could Not Simply Be Rolled Normally
On an undamaged factory guard, the inner metal lip can usually be moved gradually with controlled pressure and heat, although there is always some risk to the paint whenever the metal is reshaped.
Body filler behaves very differently from metal. Metal can flex and move to a degree, while a thick repaired area may crack, separate or break away as soon as the guard is placed under pressure.
In this case, forcing the repaired sections through a full roll would almost certainly have opened the filler and damaged the paint on the outside of the guard. Once that happened, the job would no longer have been a simple guard roll. The area would have needed bodywork and repainting, potentially costing Janelle around $1,000 or more to repair properly before selling the car.
Why Previous Repairs Are Important Before Guard Rolling
One of the first things I look for before rolling a guard is evidence of previous body repairs. Heavy filler, repaired lips, cracked sealer, repainting and distorted metal can all change what is safe and realistic.
A guard may look reasonably normal from the outside while hiding a very different story behind the lip. Once pressure is applied, those old repairs can quickly reveal themselves.
This is why I cannot promise that every guard can be rolled completely flat without risk. The condition of the metal and whatever has been done to it previously will always influence the process.
Rolling The Sound Areas First
Rather than forcing the entire lip and hoping the filler survived, I worked the sound sections of the rear guards where the metal could still be moved safely.
This allowed us to gain useful clearance through the areas that could tolerate the rolling process without placing unnecessary pressure through the heavily repaired sections.
The aim was to move what could safely be moved and then reassess the remaining tyre contact rather than treating the whole guard as though it was still original.
Carefully Reducing The Bogged Inner Areas
Where the heavy filler prevented the lip from being rolled further, I carefully sanded away only a very small amount from the inner repaired areas.
This was not an attempt to repair the previous bodywork or remove all of the filler. The purpose was simply to take away the small amount that was interfering with the tyre while avoiding movement that could crack the repair through to the outside surface.
By combining a controlled roll through the stronger areas with a very minor reduction of the obstructing filler, we were able to achieve the required clearance without opening up the external paint.
The Maximum Roll Was Not The Best Result
This job is a good example of why the best result is not always the most aggressive result.
It would have been easy to say that a full guard roll meant forcing every section completely flat. On this car, that approach would likely have caused far more damage than benefit.
The better decision was to work within the condition of the vehicle, protect the outside appearance and achieve enough clearance for Janelle’s needs.
A guard-rolling job should solve the original problem wherever reasonably possible. It should not create a much larger problem simply so the installer can say the lip was fully rolled.
Protecting The Outside Paint
The outside paint was the main concern because once the repaired area cracked, there would have been no simple way to hide it.
The filler could have broken away beneath the paint, creating visible cracks, lifting or distortion through the outer guard. Repairing that correctly would have meant removing the damaged material, rebuilding the area and repainting the panel.
Because Janelle wanted to sell the car, avoiding that unnecessary expense was an important part of the decision.
We were not ignoring the previous repair. We were working around its limitations so the car remained presentable while still gaining the clearance it needed.
Guard Rolling Requires Judgement
Guard rolling is often described as though it is only a matter of fitting a roller and moving the lip, but the condition of the panel can completely change the job.
The wheel and tyre combination, suspension height, point of contact, paint condition, previous repairs and amount of filler all need to be considered before deciding how far the guard should be moved.
Sometimes the correct answer is a full roll. Sometimes a light roll is enough. In other situations, selected trimming or careful reduction of an internal obstruction produces a safer result than forcing damaged metal and filler to move.
The process needs to suit the car in front of us rather than following one fixed method for every vehicle.
Being Honest About The Limitations
I explained to Janelle that the repaired sections could not safely be treated like clean factory metal. Trying to roll them fully would create a very high chance of cracking the filler and paint.
That meant the realistic choice was either to accept a controlled compromise or deliberately open the repair and then pay for the required bodywork afterwards.
For the way the car was being used and because it was being prepared for sale, spending around $1,000 repairing an area that could instead be carefully preserved did not make sense.
The sensible option was to gain the required clearance while avoiding damage that would have reduced the presentation and value of the vehicle.
We Achieved The Result Janelle Needed
By rolling the sections that were safe to move and carefully sanding a very small amount from the heavily filled inner areas, we achieved the tyre clearance Janelle needed.
The outside paint remained intact, the previous repair was not opened up, and the car could still be presented for sale without an unexpected bodywork expense.
That was the successful result on this job. It was not about forcing the maximum possible roll. It was about understanding the risk, protecting the car and solving the tyre-clearance problem as safely as the previous repair allowed.

Final Thoughts
Janelle’s VF Commodore showed why guard rolling is not always a simple choice between fully rolling the lip or doing nothing.
The heavy body filler from the previous repair meant that forcing the damaged areas would almost certainly have opened the paint and created a much larger repair bill.
Instead, we rolled the sound metal, carefully reduced only the small amount of filler interfering with the tyre and achieved the required clearance without damaging the outside appearance.
For me, that was the right result because it solved the problem Janelle came in with while avoiding another problem she did not need.
