VE Commodore Rear Guard Rolling – Fixing Tyre Rubbing Before It Becomes Expensive | AutoFX WA

Callum’s VE Commodore Rear Guard Rolling in O’Connor

Callum brought his VE Commodore into our workshop in O’Connor because the rear tyres were rubbing badly against the guards.

It wasn’t hard to see the problem.

The tyres had started shredding, leaving strands of rubber hanging from the sidewalls and black tyre marks all over the rear quarter panels. While it might look harmless at first, continual tyre rubbing can quickly become expensive. Not only does it destroy tyres, but in more severe cases it can damage the paint, distort the guard lip or even affect the handling of the car if left untreated.

Solving the Clearance Problem

The solution was to roll the rear guards to create the additional clearance the wider wheel and tyre combination needed.

Every guard rolling job is different. The amount of clearance available depends on the wheel width, offset, tyre size, suspension height and the condition of the vehicle itself.

On Callum’s VE, the guard rolling went exactly as planned and provided the extra room needed for the tyres to move without contacting the guard lip.

Cleaning Up the Evidence

With the rolling completed, there was still plenty of evidence that the tyres had been rubbing.

Using a suitable cleaning solvent followed by a small amount of OPTiX Utopia compound on a quality microfibre cloth, we carefully removed the black rubber marks that had transferred onto the paintwork.

It’s a simple finishing touch, but one that makes a big difference to the overall presentation of the job.

I also spent a few extra minutes picking the shredded rubber, or what we jokingly call the “spaghetti”, from the tyre sidewalls.

It certainly made the car look a little less like it had just come off a burnout pad and probably a little less likely to attract unwanted attention.

The Best Part of the Job

One of the nicest parts of running a workshop is hearing from customers after they’ve driven the car.

The next day Callum gave us a call to say how happy he was with the result.

That sort of feedback means a lot because it tells us the job performed exactly as intended out on the road, not just while it was sitting in the workshop.

For us, that’s what matters.

Every guard rolling job is about creating the clearance needed while treating the vehicle with care and leaving it looking better than when it arrived.

If your tyres are rubbing, leaving black marks on the guards or you’re fitting a wider wheel and tyre package, feel free to get in touch with us.

We’ll assess your setup and recommend the most practical solution for your vehicle.
