Quartz Coatings?
OP888 is a hard SiO₂ glass coating.
SiO₂ stands for silicon dioxide, which is the same basic chemical family found in quartz. Quartz is also one of the most common minerals found in sand, which is why ceramic and quartz-style coatings are often described as glass coatings.
OP888 is formulated to be a tough, hard SiO₂ coating that bonds to the paint surface and helps improve gloss, shine and clarity. It can also add a small amount of colour saturation, especially on darker or richer colours.
We have used OP888 since before 2017, and it is still a coating we recommend for gloss paint, wheels and matte paint when the job suits it.
One important point: we do not recommend DIY glass coating applications on matte or satin paint. Matte finishes cannot be corrected the same way as gloss paint if something goes wrong, so they should be left to a trained professional.
How Long Do Coatings Last?
The truth is, all coatings will only perform as well as the care they are given.
Even a coating rated for 10 years can fail in less than 2 years if it is washed badly, neglected, exposed to harsh chemicals or left in a tough environment.
On the other hand, some coatings have lasted longer than their rated lifespan when the vehicle is well cared for.
There are many variables that affect coating life, but the two main ones are:
What environment the vehicle is exposed to
Who washes it, what products are used, and how the coating is maintained
A coating is not magic. It is a protective layer that needs proper care to perform at its best.
