Mazda MX-5 Guard Rolling and Rear Guard Pumping for Wider Wheels
This Mazda MX-5 came in needing more than a standard guard roll.
The guards had already been rolled previously, but the owner was fitting 17×10-inch wheels, which meant it needed more clearance than a basic rolled lip could provide.
That is where pumping the guards comes in.
Rolling and pumping are not the same thing.
A standard guard roll usually focuses on folding the inner lip upward to gain clearance. Pumping goes further by reshaping the outer guard area to create more room outward.
On this MX-5, the rear guards were pumped by around 25mm.
That is a fair amount on a small car like this, so the shape had to be worked carefully to keep the curve looking natural rather than making the guard look like it had just been forced out.
The aim was not just to create clearance.
The aim was to create clearance while still keeping a nice curve through the panel.
That matters because on a small car like an MX-5, poor guard work stands out very quickly. If the shape is wrong, the whole side of the car can look off.
We also fixed up the section where the tyre had previously caught and pulled the guard out.
That sort of thing is common when a car is already running close fitment. Once the tyre grabs the edge, it can distort the area and make the guard look rough.
The job came up well.
The rears gained the clearance needed for the 17×10 setup, while still keeping a clean curve through the guard.
This is the type of guard rolling job where experience matters because you are not just trying to “make it fit”.
You are working with the paint, panel shape, previous rolling work, tyre clearance and the owner’s wheel setup all at the same time.
Every car reacts differently.
Some panels move nicely.
Some fight you.
Some have old repairs.
Some have paint that does not want to play the game.
With this MX-5, the previous roll meant the starting point was already part way there, but getting that extra 25mm while keeping the shape right was the real job.
Guard rolling and pumping is always about balance.
Clearance matters.
But so does shape.
