Lexus GX550 Clear Matte PPF – Turning Gloss Green Into a Matte Finish

Lexus GX550 Clear Matte PPF Installation – A Full Matte Paint Protection Film Conversion
This Lexus GX550 came in brand new, and it was the first one we had worked on.

So there was definitely a learning curve.

That is not a bad thing.

Some cars are simple to work on. Others take time to understand properly, especially when they are new models with trims, edges and design features you have not pulled apart before.

This GX550 was a lovely dark green colour with a gold fleck through the paint. The owner wanted to change the finish from gloss to matte while still protecting the original paint underneath.

So we used clear matte OPTiX paint protection film.

The result looked fantastic in the sunlight.

That dark green with the gold fleck showing through the matte film looked tough, but still classy at the same time. It changed the whole character of the vehicle without hiding what made the colour special in the first place.

This was not a quick job.

To get the finish right and reduce visible edges, a lot of trim had to be removed.

Door trims.

Wheel arch trims.

Door handles.

Mirrors.

Bumper deck.

And plenty of other little pieces that make the difference between a basic install and a cleaner, more factory-style result.

The more trim a vehicle has, the harder the job becomes.

Not just because removing and refitting parts takes time, but because every trim piece affects how the film is positioned, tucked, stretched and finished.

If you do not remove enough, you end up with more visible edges.

If you remove too much without understanding how the car comes apart, you can create problems.

That is the balance.

The aim is to tuck the film wherever possible so there are fewer exposed edges and the finish looks cleaner long term.

Clear matte PPF is not just about changing appearance.

It is still paint protection film.

That means the original gloss paint remains underneath while the film becomes the sacrificial layer.

The film takes the abuse from washing, UV, road grime, bugs, bird droppings and daily use.

The OPTiX clear matte film comes with a 10-year warranty and still gives the vehicle the protection benefits expected from modern PPF.

But like all PPF work, the final result depends heavily on preparation, panel access, edge control, cleanliness and installation time.

This GX550 took around two weeks.

To be honest, two weeks was not really long enough because the vehicle came in quite late and we already had bookings around it.

We were under the pump.

But we got there in the end, and the finished result was worth it.

The car looked mint.

Tough.

Classy.

Different.

And protected.

That is what clear matte PPF does well when it is done properly.

It changes the feel of the car while protecting what is underneath.
