Maserati Guard Rolling: Rectifying Previous Damage for Perfect Clearance

Shaping metal requires a deep understanding of material physics, controlled thermal application, and absolute precision. If you try to force steel or aluminum to bend without the correct mechanical workflow, you will inevitably fracture the finish.

When this Maserati arrived at our O’Connor workshop, the objective was to roll the wheel arches to achieve the precise clearance needed for the vehicle’s fitment. The job required rolling both rear guards along with the driver’s side front guard. However, our initial inspection revealed minor paint damage on the inner lipsโ€”the direct result of a previous, improper DIY attempt by the owner to force the metal back.

While touching up pre-existing panel damage is completely outside the standard scope of a professional guard rolling service, our operational philosophy is anchored in transparency and delivering long-term value. We chose to help out and remediate the area first. Our team meticulously sanded back the fractured edges and painted the damaged sections, sealing the substrate correctly before completing the mechanical work.

Once the paint surface was stabilized, we executed our specialized guard rolling procedure. As with any process that involves bending metal and paint together, there is always an inherent structural risk involved. To minimize this risk and keep the finish intact, we use professional guard rolling machinery combined with a high-output heat gun. Carefully heating the metal is a critical step that makes the paint layer significantly more pliable and elastic as the inner lip is progressively folded back.

This calculated, highly controlled approach drastically reduces the risk of cracking the finish, which is especially vital on older vehicles or panels that have undergone previous repair work. The Maserati left our shop with flush inner lips, zero tire rub, and properly protected paintwork.
