BMW iX PPF and FMJ Coating – Realistic Protection for a Used Family Car

BMW iX Paint Protection Film and FMJ Coating – Protecting a Used Family Car Properly

This 2022 BMW iX came in second-hand and, to be fair, it had been well kept by the previous owner.

But well kept does not mean perfect.

Once you start looking properly, especially around bumpers, gloss black trims and lower areas, the real-world use starts showing.

There were scrapes under the front bumper, small nicks, chips and general gravel rash. The high-gloss black plastic trims had also taken some wear, which is very common on modern cars because gloss black trim shows almost everything.

The customer chose protection without going into a full paint correction.

And honestly, that made sense for how the car is going to be used.

This is going to be a family car. It will most likely get regular cleaning, and possibly from cheaper hand wash places or quick wash services. That means light scratches and swirls are probably going to happen again anyway.

So instead of spending extra money removing every fine mark now, the customer chose a more practical protection-first approach.

That is a valid choice.

Not every car needs a full correction before protection.

The paint already presented better than many one-year-old cars, even though this one is around four years old. There were some fine scratches and swirls here and there, but nothing too offensive for the intended use.

The front bumper was protected with PPF, including the gloss black trims.

This was not a simple bumper job.

The lower areas had scrapes, gouges and rough sections. When paint or plastic is rough, damaged or gouged, PPF does not have enough proper contact with the surface. The film can lift or push itself away because it cannot sit flat and bond properly to damaged texture.

In those areas, the answer is not to pretend film will magically stick to everything.

Sometimes the film needs to be applied and then trimmed back from damaged sections so it looks better and performs better.

That is the honest approach.

Film needs surface contact to stay down properly.

The BMW also received PPF on the rocker panels, which was a smart choice because those gloss black lower sections are very likely to get scuffed. We also applied PPF to the rear bumper, including the rear bumper deck, plus the headlights and mirrors.

The rest of the car received two layers of OPTiX FMJ Graphene coating.

This is where the coating message matters.

Preparation and polishing refine the clear coat surface and create clarity and shine. But on this job, the customer deliberately chose not to chase full correction because the vehicle’s use did not justify it.

FMJ still adds a tough bonded glass-like coating layer over the prepared surfaces. That coating helps protect against weathering, UV, grime and washing while also increasing gloss, slickness and reflections.

Coating does not stop scratches from poor washing.

PPF does not fix damaged plastic.

But the right combination can still make a used family car much better protected in the areas that matter most.

For this BMW iX, the logic was simple:

Protect the areas most likely to get hammered.

Use PPF where physical impact and scuffing are most likely.

Use FMJ coating over the rest to make the car easier to wash and better protected.

That is not the most expensive option.

It is not the most perfect option.

But for this car and this owner, it was probably the most sensible option.
