Bird Dropping Stains on Car Paint: When Polishing Is Not Enough
Bird dropping stains can be frustrating because they do not always sit on top of the paint.
Sometimes you are lucky and the mark will polish out. Other times, the acids in the bird droppings can etch into the clear coat, leaving a stain or dull patch that normal polishing will not fully remove.
When that happens, the next step may be careful wet sanding of the affected area.
Why Bird Droppings Can Damage Paint
Bird droppings can be harsh on automotive paint, especially when they are left sitting on the surface in the sun.
The heat can speed up the damage and the mark can begin to etch into the clear coat. Once that happens, the stain may no longer be removable with a normal polish.
This is why it is always best to remove bird droppings as soon as possible using water, a safe detail spray or a proper wash method. Do not scrape it off dry, as that can create scratches.
When Polishing Is Not Enough
If a bird dropping stain has etched into the clear coat, polishing may improve it, but it may not remove it completely.
In these situations, careful wet sanding may be required. This is normally done with fine grades such as 1500 and 2000 grit, depending on how deep the mark is and how much clear coat is available.
The sanding process levels the affected area, but it also creates sanding marks that then need to be removed by machine polishing.

After sanding, the finish will look dull and hazy.
That is normal.
The sanding marks are then refined using machine polishing to restore gloss, clarity and reflection.
