After 18 months in harsh industrial conditions, this Ford Mustang returned to AutoFX WA for inspection. See how OPTIX FMJ Graphene Coating performed in real-world Perth conditions.
Some cars are weekend toys. Some are meticulously maintained.
And then there are cars like Mitch’s black Ford Mustang.
This Mustang was coated with a single layer of OPTIX FMJ Graphene Coating around 18 months ago. It wasn’t purchased as a show car or a weekend cruiser. It was simply bought to get from A to B.
At the time, Mitch only expected to keep the car for around two years, so he chose a sensible protection package rather than chasing the most expensive option available. His car would be parked in the open at his high performance mechanical workshop in an industrial area
Now the Mustang is about to be sold, and Mitch wanted to present it properly for the next owner.
Not perfect.
Just clean, tidy and well presented.
A Tough Life For Any Coating
This car spends much of its time parked outdoors at a workshop in Bibra Lake, one of Perth’s busiest industrial areas.
Many people don’t realise how much contamination lands on paint every day.
Industrial fallout, metallic particles, diesel soot, combustion by-products, airborne hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other pollutants can settle on the paint surface without being visible at first. Over time these contaminants accumulate on the vehicle, contributing to staining, roughness, water spotting and reduced gloss that many owners simply assume appeared out of nowhere.
Vehicles parked near busy roads, industrial estates, manufacturing facilities and major transport corridors are often exposed to significantly higher levels of airborne contamination than vehicles kept in suburban garages or undercover parking.
The contamination doesn’t arrive all at once.
It builds up one microscopic layer at a time until one day the paint feels rough, looks stained and people wonder where it came from.
Another increasingly common source of staining is AdBlue contamination, particularly on vehicles operating around heavy diesel traffic, transport depots and industrial environments.
Anyone who has accidentally spilled AdBlue on paintwork and left it sitting for several days already knows how stubborn those marks can become. AdBlue is primarily made from demineralised water and automotive-grade urea. As the water evaporates, concentrated urea residue can crystallise on the surface, leaving behind deposits and staining that may require polishing or paint correction to fully remove.
When we washed and decontaminated the Mustang, the clay bar quickly told the story.
There was a significant amount of brown contamination removed from the paint, and the vehicle showed plenty of environmental staining throughout.
Why Industrial Areas Are Hard On Paint
Many people assume contamination only happens when they can physically see dirt.
The reality is very different.
Microscopic airborne particles are constantly settling onto vehicle surfaces. Heat, moisture, UV exposure and normal environmental conditions all contribute to contamination becoming more difficult to remove over time.
Industrial areas typically contain higher concentrations of airborne hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), combustion residue and microscopic particulate matter generated by transport, manufacturing, mechanical workshops and industrial processes.
These contaminants gradually settle onto vehicle surfaces where they interact with moisture, UV exposure, rainwater and everyday environmental fallout. Over time this contamination can bond to the paint surface, reducing gloss, creating staining and leaving the paint feeling rough to the touch.
Vehicles located near major flight paths may also be exposed to additional airborne particulate contamination associated with aircraft emissions and atmospheric fallout, adding to the environmental load experienced by the paintwork.
Vehicles parked outdoors in industrial environments often require significantly more decontamination work than vehicles that spend their lives in garages or sheltered parking.
How Was The FMJ Coating Holding Up?
After washing and claying the vehicle, we assessed the coating’s remaining performance.
Our observations were:
- Bonnet: approximately 80% performance remaining
- Small section of bonnet: approximately 40% performance remaining
- Front bumper: approximately 90%
- Sides of vehicle: above 90%
- Roof: approximately 60%
- Rear bumper: approximately 80%
- Boot lid and rear wing: above 70%
Overall, the coating was performing better than expected.
This is particularly impressive when you consider the lifestyle of this vehicle.
The Mustang spends much of its time outdoors and receives very little maintenance. Realistically, it may only be washed every few months.
When it isn’t parked at the workshop, it often sits on a rural property where presentation is understandably not a priority.
In other words, this vehicle has experienced considerably more environmental abuse than the average daily driver.
Why The Results Make Sense
A single layer of FMJ Graphene Coating is generally rated for around three years of protection under normal real-world conditions.
However, coatings don’t age according to a calendar.
They age according to usage.
A vehicle parked indoors, washed regularly and protected from harsh environmental contamination will typically maintain performance far longer than a vehicle living outdoors in challenging conditions.
This Mustang has likely experienced two to three times the environmental exposure of an average well-maintained vehicle.
Considering those conditions, the coating’s performance after 18 months was exactly where we would hope it would be.
The bond was still present.
The protection was still working.
The vehicle simply required decontamination and a paint enhancement to restore presentation.
FMJ’s Real Advantage
One of the strengths of OPTIX FMJ Graphene Coating has always been its strong bonding foundation.
A coating is only as good as its ability to remain attached to the paint.
FMJ develops a very strong bond to the surface, which is one reason installers quickly notice it can be more demanding to apply than some easier coatings.
That strong bond forms the foundation.
On top of that sits a durable, slick protective layer that continues to provide noticeable slickness and protection wash after wash.
Preparation creates gloss, clarity and reflection by permanently refining the paint surface.
The coating then adds another layer of protection while increasing shine, gloss, depth and reflections because a glass-like protective layer is added to the paint surface.
The strong bond is a major advantage.
The tough exterior is another.
Together they help the coating continue performing even when the vehicle isn’t receiving ideal maintenance.
Even after multiple washes, the slick feel remains noticeable. That’s one of the characteristics many FMJ customers comment on long after the initial application.
The Problem With Long Warranty Marketing
This inspection also reinforces something we have believed for many years.
We don’t believe in selling coatings based purely on the biggest warranty number.
Five years is sensible.
Six years is already stretching expectations for many daily driven vehicles.
Beyond that, things become more complicated.
The reality is that most daily driven vehicles will develop wash marks, swirls, scratches and environmental staining long before an ultra-long warranty coating reaches its advertised lifespan.
Even if the coating itself remains technically present, the paint underneath often still requires correction work to maintain appearance.
A coating cannot stop poor washing techniques.
A coating cannot stop every scratch.
A coating cannot stop years of contamination from building up on the surface.
What matters more is choosing a quality coating with a strong bond, a durable exterior layer and realistic expectations.
Paying significantly more for a coating simply because it advertises an extremely long warranty does not automatically mean you’ll receive better real-world results.
At the end of the day, protection products still need to be matched to how the vehicle is actually used.
The Final Result
For this visit, the goal wasn’t perfection.
The goal was presentation.
A thorough wash, decontamination, paint enhancement, wheel and tyre treatment, and a complimentary application of OPTIX OP888 Ceramic Coating will help ensure the next owner receives a vehicle that looks clean, glossy and well cared for.
Mitch wasn’t chasing perfection.
He simply wanted to hand over the car in the best condition reasonably possible for its age and use.
Sometimes that’s all a car needs.
And sometimes a real-world inspection like this tells you more about a coating than any warranty brochure ever could.
After 18 months of hard use, industrial fallout, outdoor parking and minimal maintenance, the FMJ coating was still doing exactly what it was designed to do.
Not marketing.
Not theory.
Just real-world protection on a real-world car.
