VF Commodore Guard Rolling and Rear Bumper Mount Relocation
Angus brought his VF Commodore into AutoFX WA after fitting a new set of 20×10-inch rear wheels with 275/30R20 tyres.
With the wider wheel and tyre setup, additional clearance was needed at the rear. This job required more than simply rolling the rear guard lips. The rear bumper mounts also needed to be relocated to provide the clearance needed for the new setup.
Why the VF Commodore Bumper Mount Can Be a Clearance Problem
When fitting wider wheels and tyres to a VF Commodore, rolling the metal guard lip can provide additional clearance, but there can still be another contact point where the rear bumper attaches near the wheel arch.
For Angus’s VF, we relocated this mounting point.
The process involves drilling a new mounting hole approximately 20–30 mm further back from the original mounting position. A screw is then fitted through the new hole, creating a new mounting point and securing the bumper in its relocated position.
Once we know the bumper is properly secured in its new position, we can remove the excess metal and plastic from the original mounting area that is no longer required.
This creates additional clearance where the wider tyre may otherwise come into contact with the original bumper mounting point.
Guard Rolling for the 20×10 and 275 Tyre Setup
With the bumper mount relocation taken care of, we could complete the rear guard rolling.
As with any guard rolling in Perth, the amount of work required depends on the vehicle, wheel offset, tyre size, suspension height and the clearance the particular setup needs.
In Angus’s case, the combination of 20×10 wheels and 275/30R20 tyres meant addressing both the guard lip and the bumper mounting area was the right approach.
The final result came up perfectly, giving the new wheel and tyre combination the additional clearance it needed while keeping everything properly secured.
Bumper Mount Relocation Is an Additional Service
It’s important to point out that rear bumper mount relocation is an additional cost to our standard guard rolling service.
Not every Commodore needs this work. It depends on the wheel and tyre combination and where the clearance problem is occurring.
If the guard lip is the only contact point, a standard guard roll may be enough. If the tyre is also getting close to the bumper mounting area, relocating the mount can provide valuable additional clearance.
This is why we look at the complete setup rather than assuming every car needs exactly the same work.
For Angus’s VF Commodore, the combination of rear guard rolling and bumper mount relocation worked perfectly with his newly fitted 20×10 wheels and 275/30R20 tyres.
