FJ Cruiser Paint Correction: Cutting Oxidation & Dyeing Faded Trim
Omar made the trip over from Dalkeith to drop off his Toyota FJ Cruiser for a much-needed paint correction and full exterior trim restoration. These heavy-duty 4x4s are built to handle the tough Australian elements, but years of sun exposure and road wear can really take a toll on both the paintwork and the extensive plastic trim…
A house built on sand will fall, no matter how beautiful the architecture above it. The same rule applies to paint correction. You cannot achieve a flawless, lasting finish without exhausting, careful preparation. The glossy end result is simply a reflection of the foundation you build.
This heavily oxidized Toyota FJ Cruiser came into our O’Connor workshop completely dry, chalky, and faded from years under the Australian sun. Before a machine polisher ever touched the panels, massive labour hours were spent doing nothing but taping up and isolating the endless plastic utility trim. If a spinning pad hits dry plastic, that trim is instantly burnt and permanently ruined.
Look at the transformation on the rear quarter panel. By executing a controlled, heavy correction step, we cut away the dead, oxidized layer of paint to reveal a fantastic, deep finish with excellent clarity, easily removing the light surface scratches.
We then addressed the faded plastics. We Those cheap products simply wash off in the rain or act as a magnet for Perth dust. Instead, we applied a true matte black plastic dye that chemically bonds to the pores of the material.
Be aware: tire dyeing is temporary. If you wash the vehicle with harsh truck washes or acid cleaners, it will strip. Clean it only with pH-neutral soap, and it will give you a solid few months of a deep, dry matte black look. It is a meticulous processโespecially when navigating around factory white letteringโbut it is the only truthful way to restore the surface properly.
