Paint protection film is often described by its thickness, finish or warranty, but the materials beneath its surface are also an important part of its performance.
OPTiX paint protection film uses an established aliphatic TPU foundation. Our manufacturing supply information identifies aliphatic TPU materials sourced from Lubrizol and BASF, two major international chemical-material producers.
That is useful information, but it needs to be explained accurately. It does not mean Lubrizol or BASF manufactures, certifies or endorses the completed OPTiX film. It means materials within the manufacturing supply chain are identified as coming from recognised TPU producers.
The quality of the finished PPF still depends on how all its layers are manufactured and work together.
What is aliphatic TPU?
TPU stands for thermoplastic polyurethane. It provides the flexible main body of many modern paint protection films, allowing the film to conform around curved vehicle panels while providing a physical barrier over the paint.
There are different polyurethane chemistries. For exterior automotive protection, aliphatic TPU is valued for its suitability in applications exposed to sunlight and weather.
It should not be confused with cheaper material simply described as polyurethane or with films designed mainly for short-term cosmetic use. The exact formulation, manufacturing consistency and complete film construction all affect its behaviour.
A good aliphatic TPU foundation can support flexibility, clarity and resistance to environmental exposure. However, TPU alone does not determine whether the completed film will be easy to install, remain clear or perform properly
