Rear guard rolling for a Nissan 350Z track car
This Nissan 350Z came into AutoFX WA for both rear guards to be rolled to provide additional tyre clearance for track use. Guard rolling can be a practical way to reduce the chance of tyre contact at the guard lip, but it is not a one-process job. The condition of the panel, paint and any previous repairs all affect how the work should be approached.
Why the left rear quarter required extra care
The left rear quarter had previously been resprayed after the vehicle struck cones on track. It also contained a substantial amount of body filler in the repaired area.
Paint depth readings around that section were approximately 1.7 mm. That reading, combined with the known repair work, indicated a higher risk of cracking through the paint or filler while rolling the guard. A repaired panel does not react in the same way as an original, undisturbed panel, and the guard lip needs to be worked carefully rather than forced into shape.
Controlled guard rolling process
Both rear guards were rolled with the aim of gaining the required clearance while managing the condition of the existing paintwork and repair. The process requires judgement throughout the job, particularly when working near previous paint and filler repairs.
The guard edge is gradually formed rather than treated as though every panel can tolerate the same amount of movement. This is especially important on track cars, where clearance may be needed but the vehicle can also carry evidence of previous use, repair work or panel modifications.
On this 350Z, both rear guards were successfully rolled. No visible cracking or damage occurred during the work, including through the heavily repaired left rear section.
Guard rolling has limits
A good result on one car does not mean every vehicle carries the same level of risk. Previous paintwork, filler thickness, paint condition, panel condition and the amount of clearance required all need to be considered before starting.
Guard rolling can assist with tyre clearance, but it cannot guarantee that an existing repaired area will behave like factory paint. In some cases, the safest decision may be to limit how far a guard can be rolled or discuss other clearance options.
