This pearl-white Mitsubishi Outlander came to AutoFX WA for a new-car protection package. The work included approximately four hours of single-stage machine polishing before OPTiX FMJ was applied to the main painted body, OPTiX OP6 to the exterior glass and OPTiX OP888 to the visible wheel faces.
White paint can hide fine defects more easily than a dark colour, but that does not mean preparation makes no difference. Refining the paint before coating improved the clarity of the pearl, strengthened the reflections and gave the finished Outlander noticeably more shine and depth.
Why did a new Mitsubishi Outlander need machine polishing?
New does not automatically mean coating-ready. Before protection is applied, the paint still needs to be cleaned, inspected and prepared according to its actual condition.
For this Outlander, a single-stage machine polish was the appropriate preparation. Approximately four hours were spent refining the painted surfaces before the coating stage began. This was not a heavy correction process or an attempt to chase every possible imperfection. It was a controlled polishing stage designed to improve the finish and leave a clean, consistent surface for FMJ.
The term “single-stage” refers to one selected polishing process across the vehicle. It does not mean one quick pass or that preparation is rushed. Curves, edges, trim and different panel shapes still need to be worked around carefully.
Can polishing really improve pearl-white paint?
Yes. The change may present differently from the dramatic defect removal often seen on black paint, but the improvement is still visible. Fine marks and surface haze scatter reflected light. Once the surface is refined, reflections become cleaner and the pearl effect can appear clearer and deeper.
On a white vehicle, good preparation is often seen through better gloss, more even reflections and greater definition along the body lines. The finished photographs show that white paint does not have to look flat simply because the colour is light.
A ceramic coating should protect the finish produced during preparation; it should not be used to disguise paint that needed polishing first.
Where was OPTiX FMJ applied?
OPTiX FMJ was applied to the Outlander’s main painted body after the polishing and final surface preparation were completed. Its purpose is to protect that prepared finish and make normal washing and contamination removal more manageable.
FMJ also leaves a slick, glossy surface, but the quality of the finished appearance still depends heavily on what is underneath it. Coating over an unprepared surface would lock in the existing finish rather than create the clarity achieved by polishing.
Ceramic coating does not prevent stone chips and cannot stop every scratch. Paint protection film performs a different job by adding a physical film layer to impact-prone panels.
What does OP6 do on the exterior glass?
OPTiX OP6 was applied to the exterior glass. A dedicated glass coating changes how water and contamination behave on the surface and can make normal exterior-glass cleaning more manageable.
The scope described here is the exterior glass only. A coated windscreen and windows still need suitable washing and maintenance, and the coating does not remove the need to clean insects, mineral deposits or other contamination.
Why was OP888 used on the wheel faces?
OPTiX OP888 was applied to the visible faces of the Outlander’s wheels. Wheel faces are regularly exposed to brake dust, road grime and repeated washing, so coating them gives those surfaces a protected, easier-to-clean finish.
This article refers specifically to the visible wheel faces. It does not claim that the wheel barrels, brake calipers or other components were coated.

It also cannot repair stone chips, replace missing paint or prevent damage from careless contact. Those limitations should be understood before choosing a package so the protection matches the way the vehicle will be used.
