Ex-Demo Lexus 500h Paint Enhancement and FMJ Ceramic Coating

Emma brought her ex-demo Lexus 500h to AutoFX WA from the Melville area for paint enhancement followed by our six-year OPTiX FMJ graphene ceramic-coating system.

The paint was generally in good condition, but it had light marring and clear evidence of previous machine polishing. The vehicle did not need an all-out show-car correction costing more than $3,000. It needed an honest level of preparation that suited its actual condition, followed by durable protection.

Inspecting the ex-demo Lexus before coating

Ex-demo vehicles may be relatively new, but that does not mean their paint is untouched. They can be washed regularly, wiped down in a hurry and machine polished before being offered for sale.

This Lexus had already been buffed before it arrived at AutoFX WA. The paint remained reasonably good overall, apart from light marring, but several areas showed evidence of careless previous work.

The most noticeable damage was on the left-hand side. The rubber strip between the two doors had been melted away by contact with a polishing machine. There were also several other smaller areas of existing damage around the vehicle.

A ceramic coating cannot repair melted rubber or physical damage. These conditions need to be identified before work begins so the owner understands what polishing and coating can realistically achieve.

Why Emma did not need a $3,000 show-car correction

Not every vehicle requires intensive multi-stage paint correction.

An all-out show-car process can involve many hours of defect removal, detailed refinement and attention to very small imperfections. That level of work has its place, but it was not necessary for Emma’s Lexus or the way she intended to use it.

The paint was already in fairly good condition. Its main problem was light surface marring rather than extensive deep scratches or severe deterioration.

A controlled paint enhancement provided the sensible balance. It improved the clarity and gloss, reduced the light marring and prepared the surface properly without charging Emma for work the vehicle did not require.

Paint enhancement before FMJ coating

Paint preparation is responsible for the clarity and gloss seen before a coating is applied. Ceramic coating protects and enhances the prepared surface, but it cannot correct defects hiding underneath it.

The Lexus was carefully cleaned, decontaminated and assessed before machine polishing. The polishing process was selected to refine the light marring while preserving as much healthy clear coat as possible.

This was particularly important because the car had already been buffed elsewhere. Repeatedly cutting the paint without understanding its history can remove more clear coat than necessary.

The goal was a cleaner and more consistent finish—not chasing every tiny mark at any cost.

Six-year OPTiX FMJ graphene ceramic coating

Once the paint enhancement was completed and the surface properly prepared, the Lexus received the two-layer OPTiX FMJ system used for our approximately six-year coating package.

FMJ combines a SiO₂ coating foundation with reduced graphene oxide. It is known for its strong bond, tough exterior and the slick surface feel that remains noticeable through repeated washing when the coating is maintained correctly.

That strong bond also makes FMJ demanding to install. It can feel sticky during application and requires controlled product placement, careful levelling and suitable lighting to ensure that residue and high spots are not left behind.

The completed coating helps protect the prepared finish from normal environmental contamination while making regular washing and drying easier.

It will not stop stone chips or make the Lexus scratch-proof. Safe washing and sensible maintenance remain important throughout the coating’s life.

Protection matched to the vehicle

This job was a good example of why every vehicle should be assessed individually before recommending paint correction or ceramic coating.

Emma did not need to pay for an extreme show-car correction. The Lexus required careful preparation, improvement of its light marring and a coating system that would make the finish easier to maintain.

The result was a clearer, glossier and properly protected ex-demo Lexus without removing unnecessary clear coat or selling the owner a level of correction she did not need.
