Adrian has been an AutoFX WA customer since 2010, so it was good to welcome him back with his new red Toyota GR Corolla. This time, the job was to prepare and protect the car properly from the beginning rather than wait for the paint to accumulate more washing marks and contamination.

Although the GR Corolla was new, the paint was not ready to coat without polishing. It required seven hours of fine machine polishing before we applied OPTiX FMJ to the painted surfaces. The faces of the wheels and the exterior glass were protected separately with OPTiX OP888.

Why did a new GR Corolla need seven hours of polishing?

New does not automatically mean that a vehicle’s paint is ready for a ceramic coating. A car can pick up light marks during manufacturing, transport, storage, pre-delivery preparation or washing. The amount and cause vary from vehicle to vehicle, so the paint still needs to be inspected rather than judged only by its age.

Red paint also makes clarity and reflected light particularly noticeable. Under workshop lighting, fine marks and inconsistencies can interrupt what should be a clean, sharp finish.

Adrian’s GR Corolla required seven hours of fine polishing. This was not an aggressive correction intended to chase every possible defect. It was controlled preparation to refine the new paint, improve its clarity and leave a suitable surface for the coating.

What was involved in preparing the paint?

Before coating, the paint needed to be clean, inspected and polished consistently across the vehicle. Fine polishing still takes time because the GR Corolla has numerous curves, vents, edges and contrasting trim areas that cannot be treated as one large flat panel.

The process photographs show selected trim and access areas masked or temporarily opened during preparation. This helped us work carefully around edges and more complicated sections without pretending that a new car can simply be given a quick wipe and coated.

After polishing, the paint was prepared for coating so that polishing residues and other contamination did not interfere with the application. The quality of this preparation affects both the visible finish and the coating process.

Why was OPTiX FMJ used on the paint?

OPTiX FMJ was applied to the painted surfaces after the seven hours of fine polishing and final preparation. Its job is to protect the finish we created and make normal contamination easier to remove during regular washing.

The coating also gives the red paint a slick, glossy appearance, but the important point is that the coating went over properly prepared paint. A coating can add protection and change how the surface behaves; it cannot conceal poor polishing or permanently hide defects underneath it.

FMJ is also a demanding coating to apply and level. Strong bonding and a slick finished surface are useful qualities, but they do not remove the need for controlled application, suitable lighting and careful inspection as each section is completed.

Where was OPTiX OP888 applied?

OPTiX OP888 was used on the faces of the GR Corolla’s wheels and on the exterior glass.

On the wheel faces, the coating provides a protected surface that can make routine brake-dust and road-grime removal more manageable. The scope was the visible faces of the wheels; this article does not claim that the wheel barrels, brake calipers or other removed components were coated.

OP888 was also applied to the exterior glass. As with any coated surface, ongoing performance still depends on suitable washing and maintenance. A coating does not make glass maintenance-free or remove the need to clean contamination from it.

What does the finished red paint show?

The finished photographs show strong reflections across the bonnet, front guards, doors and rear quarters. They also show why the preparation stage mattered. The shape of the GR Corolla creates complex reflections, and a clean finish allows those body lines to read more clearly.

The objective was not to describe a new vehicle as damaged or to promise an artificial idea of perfection. It was to inspect what Adrian’s car actually needed, spend the required seven hours refining it and then protect the completed work with products selected for the different surfaces.

What can ceramic coating protect—and what can it not do?

Ceramic coating is useful for protecting prepared paint from normal environmental contamination and making regular washing easier. It can also help the surface remain slick and easier to clean when it is maintained correctly.

It does not stop stone chips and cannot prevent every scratch. Drivers wanting physical impact protection for vulnerable panels should consider paint protection film separately. Coating and PPF perform different jobs, and the appropriate choice depends on how the car will be used.

Why does a returning customer since 2010 matter?

Adrian first came to AutoFX WA in 2010. A returning customer relationship over that length of time matters because it is built through the work completed on previous vehicles, honest explanations and confidence that a new car will be treated carefully.

Vehicles and protection products have changed considerably since 2010, but the basic responsibility has not. We still need to inspect the vehicle in front of us, explain what it requires and complete the preparation properly before applying protection.

For this GR Corolla, that meant recognising that a new vehicle still required seven hours of fine polishing rather than rushing directly to the coating stage.

Frequently asked questions

Should a new car be polished before ceramic coating?

Only after inspection can the correct preparation be confirmed. Some new vehicles need relatively little refinement, while others have visible fine marks or inconsistencies that should be polished before coating.

Does fine polishing remove clear coat?

Machine polishing removes a small amount of surface material, which is why the process should be matched to the paint condition and the required result. The aim here was responsible refinement, not unnecessary heavy correction.

Does FMJ ceramic coating prevent stone chips?

No. Ceramic coating is not a substitute for paint protection film. PPF provides a physical film layer for impact-prone areas, while coating mainly assists with surface protection and maintenance.

Were the complete wheels coated on this GR Corolla?

No. OPTiX OP888 was applied to the wheel faces. The wheel barrels and brake calipers are not included in the scope described in this article.

What glass was coated?
