This black Genesis GV60 came to AutoFX WA in O’Connor for paint preparation and OPTiX FMJ graphene ceramic coating. Dark metallic paint can show washing marks, light scratches and contamination very easily, so the condition of the surface before coating has a major influence on the finished result.
The coating itself does not create paint clarity. That comes from the cleaning, inspection and machine-polishing stages completed beforehand. FMJ is then applied to protect the prepared finish and make routine washing more manageable.
Preparing black metallic paint before coating
Black paint can look impressive when it is properly prepared, but it is also less forgiving than many lighter colours. Fine marks that are difficult to see on white or silver paint can become obvious under workshop lighting on a dark vehicle.
The GV60 was washed and decontaminated before the paint was inspected. Machine polishing was then carried out where appropriate to improve the clarity and depth without chasing defects that could not be safely removed.
This preparation is important because a ceramic coating follows the condition of the surface underneath it. Applying a coating over uncorrected marks does not remove or conceal them.
Applying OPTiX FMJ to the Genesis GV60
After preparation, OPTiX FMJ was applied to the exterior paint. FMJ uses a SiO₂ coating foundation with reduced graphene oxide. It forms a strong bond, has a tough exterior and produces a noticeably slick finish when it has been applied and maintained correctly.
That strong bonding behaviour also makes FMJ more demanding to install than an ordinary wipe-on product. It can feel sticky during application and requires controlled application and careful levelling to produce a consistent result across the vehicle.
What ceramic coating can realistically do
FMJ helps normal dirt and environmental contamination release more easily during washing. This is useful on a vehicle such as the Genesis GV60, where the smooth body shape and large painted panels are a major part of its appearance.
Ceramic coating cannot prevent stone chips, and it does not make the paint impossible to scratch. Correct washing and drying remain important. For physical protection from stone chips and heavier impacts, paint protection film is the appropriate option.
Protecting the finish of a modern electric vehicle
The completed coating enhanced the depth and metallic character of the black paint while protecting the finish created during preparation. The practical advantage is not simply how the vehicle looks on collection day. It is making that finish easier for the owner to care for during regular use.
Every vehicle is assessed individually at AutoFX WA. The preparation required depends on the paint condition, how the vehicle has been washed, where it is stored and the result the owner expects.
