This 1985 Mercedes-Benz came to AutoFX WA for some practical classic car detailing in Perth.

The owner was not looking for a restoration or an expensive paint correction. The car had been resprayed recently, so the aim was simply to clean up several areas and make it more enjoyable to live with.

Not every vehicle needs to be chased towards perfection. Sometimes the right job is the one that suits the car, its owner and the available budget.

A Practical Approach to an Older Mercedes

This Mercedes is around 40 years old. It is not being prepared as a concours vehicle, and the owner was not asking us to make it look brand new.

Instead, the car needed help with some of the awkward and physically demanding parts of maintaining an older vehicle.

As cars age, cleaning around the trim, chrome, lower panels and difficult areas can become time-consuming. It can also become harder for an owner to complete this work themselves.

A smaller detail can still make a worthwhile difference without turning the vehicle into a much larger and more expensive project.

Not Every Classic Car Needs Paint Correction

Paint correction is useful when an owner wants to reduce swirl marks, scratches, oxidation and other visible paint defects.

However, it is not automatically the right choice for every vehicle.

The age and condition of the paint must be considered first. Previous repairs, repainting and the amount of clear coat available can all influence what work is sensible.

The owner’s expectations are equally important.

In this case, the goal was not to chase every mark or ageing issue. We focused on sensible improvements that suited the condition and intended use of the Mercedes.

Cleaning the Paint, Chrome and Exterior

The paint, chrome and general exterior presentation were cleaned and tidied with care.

Older vehicles often include materials and finishes that should not be treated in exactly the same way as those found on a modern car. Chrome, rubber trim, repainted panels and ageing plastics may each require a different approach.

Before completing any larger polishing or correction work, we inspect the condition of the vehicle and consider what can be improved safely.

For this Mercedes, the right result was a cleaner and more presentable car rather than a restoration-style finish.

Respecting the Vehicle and the Owner’s Budget

A classic car does not need to be extremely valuable before it deserves proper care.

Many older vehicles are kept because their owners enjoy driving them, appreciate their character or have a personal connection with them. The vehicle may not be a show car, but that does not make it unimportant.

At the same time, the work must make financial sense.

There would have been little value in turning this Mercedes into a major detailing project when the owner only wanted help with several difficult areas.

We therefore kept the work focused on what would provide the most noticeable and practical improvement.

The word “detailing” can sometimes create the expectation that every vehicle must leave looking perfect.

That is not always realistic, and it is not always necessary.

Our job is to explain what is possible and then recommend an approach that suits the vehicle.
