CONGRADULATIONS! You have taken the first step in learning the ins and outs of professional, quality detailing. The course is structured around three core weeks with each giving an in depth knowledge and real world skills that can be applied to both the hobbyist detailer and the semi-pro that can be used in your business.

Upon completion of this three week course participants will learn the proper use of products and equipment along with the correct technique needed to correctly perform a range of detailing skills from entry level valet detail to the more advanced paint correction and protection process.

Week one:
Week one’s course is focused on the basic steps needed to correctly wash and maintain shine on a vehicle. This will include learning what equipment is required for the average wash and vac.

The Equipment required is as follows;

• 3 x Buckets
o Rinse Bucket
o Wash Bucket
o Wheel Wash Bucket
• Chennel Wash Mitt
• 2 x Grit Guards
• Wheel Brushes
o Flag tip
o Wheel woollies
o Long neck brush
o Short neck brush
o Parts brush
• Foaming cannon
• Dolly
• Pressure washer
• A few rags
• Vacuum

Having the right equipment is only part of the job, the right products used in sync with the correct method and technique will make or break the overall finish of the vehicle.

Products;

o Shampoo
o Iron remover
o Wheel cleaner
o Optix Final boost
o Optix nano
o Clay Bar
o Clay Lube

EXTERIOR:
Wash the vehicle using two-bucket method, making sure to use the wash mitt only in one direction dunking in the rinse after every panel. This will help to reduce scratches and improve the overall longevity of the finish.

The next step is dependant on the person’s preference and or time.

While the vehicle is still wet use a small portion of the clay bar to rub the paint using back and forth motions always feeling the paint to check that enough claying has been done.

OR

Dry the vehicle using a drying towel and then proceed to spray generous amounts of clay lube to the car then rub lubricated paintwork back and forth with small portion of the clay bar till the desired smoothness is achieved

Once completed you may decide to dress the tyres with some tire shine.

Lastly the application of a quick detailer or hydrophobic spray, this is a relatively simple step however if done incorrectly the car can look poorly done. Firstly choose the spray that you find best. The spray can then be applied to the vehicle and spread/rubbed in with a high quality microfiber towel.

The first step of any interior detail is the vacuuming; make sure to scrub the carpets with the vacuum in order to get any and all dust, dirt, grass, glitter or any other carpet contaminants. Continue to vacuum the vents, cup holders, door rubbers and dash with the assistance of a brush in order to get into the tight spots that the vacuum head cannot reach.

Once the vacuuming is done you should have a clean slate to start the interior detail.

Interior treatments vary from person to person, for a high shine leather and plastic interior use products such as Trim + Tire Shine and Leather Conditioner (in larger amounts) for a more natural “New Car” look Silk Shine, V.R.P or Optix All Trim work best and less Leather Conditioner buffed in using a foam Applicator pads.

The final step in the interior portion of a detail is the carpet shampooing. For this step

Week Two:

Week two focuses on building on the foundations learned in week one being used as preparation of the week two content which is using a machine polisher in order to polish back a thin layer of paint from the surface of the vehicle in order to bring back/enhance shine. After this step a sealant, wax and quick detail will be added to re-seal protect and emphasis the paintwork.

THIS IS NOT THE SAME AS PAINT CORRECTION.

In order to do this the following equipment is recommended.

• 5”/6” machine polisher
or
• Hand polishing pads
• Black, Blue or Red Chemical Guys Pad
• Cloths
• Applicator pads

As well as the following products
• Compound
o VSS
o V38
o V36
• Sealant
o Jetseal
o Wet Mirror Finish
• Wax
o 50/50
o Butter Wet Wax
o Celeste Dettailago
o Cherry Wet Wax

For the first step apply approximately 3-4 5c sized dollops of compound to your pad, most likely to be the white pad in many situations, However, Not always.

Below is the Chemical Guys Buffing Pad Guide to help in selecting the correct pad for the correct job.

Using a low speed spared out the compound onto panel, once the compound is spread out begin buffing using higher speeds to complete the job quicker (as high as comfortable). Once the compound has been buffed too a pale haze you can buff of the remaining residue with a plush microfiber cloth. From this step you can progress around the vehicle.

After progressing around the car and polishing the paintwork to a shine it is time to seal the paint, this is important as it adds protection to the freshly polished finish.

Using an applicator pad apply a dollop of Jet Seal or similar product and work into the paint with a 50% overlapping motion to ensure even coverage working around the whole car. Once applied go back around the car and buff the reside off.

Repeat the process with a new applicator and wax, if you are using a liquid wax the process is the same; however, if you prefer to use a hard wax such as 50/50 the applicator must be dabbed into the pot of wax.

Once the wax has been buffed off it is time for the final step. Quick details are often a spray that adds that extra pop to the paintwork. Spray the QD onto a cloth and rub into the paintwork until the entire residue is gone.

As week three is our final week we will be going through the technique and tips to start and complete a paint correction along with any questions any of you may have.

The equipment needed is as follows

• Machine Polisher
• Variety of Buffing pads
• Masking tape

In order to successfully correct paint it is important to understand the kind of scratch you are hoping to remove. For this reason the chart above can be used to gauge the severity of the scratch.

Matched with a variety of cutting and polishing compounds such as V32, V34, V36 And V38. In order to cut out deep scratches then remove lighter marks progressively getting finer.

Starting with a cutting pad with a heavy – moderate cutting compound buff the car panel by panel removing the excess compound with a microfiber towel using finer compounds on finer pads each time till the desired effect is achieved.

This process requires a lot of sight and feel for the paintwork, the ability to make judgments about how hard to cut and if the scratch is just too deep or not.
